2 Banool Ave heritage interpretation and public art
We planned, designed and implemented public artworks and signage for Id_Land’s new residential development in Yarraville to celebrate the site’s history as a former woollen mill and porcelain insulator company.
2 Banool Avenue was once a significant site in Melbourne’s industrial history. Id_Land first engaged SHP to develop a Heritage Interpretation Strategy for the site as part of a Council planning permit in 2017. We created concept designs for heritage-based landscaping and theming to provide a point of difference for the site. We were then commissioned to implement the recommendations.

This project was grounded in detailed historical research, which we undertook during Stage 1 of the project. We were then engaged to deliver Stage 2 in 2019, which involved preparing developed content and design. Our work included preparing a brief for a mural showcasing the woollen milling processes used at the site based on an original sketch from 1881.
In 2023, we project managed the fabrication and installation of all elements, including large-scale entrance lettering, a mural on the original bluestone wall by street artist André. The more artistic installations are complemented by an interpretive sign that explains why the site was so important to the local area.
