City of Casey Collection Review

Our work identified clear priorities to help the City of Casey manage its Civic History Collection and preserve it for the future.

The City of Casey is a young local government area located in Melbourne’s outer south-eastern suburbs. It came into being in 1994 during a period of state-wide local council amalgamations. The Civic Memorabilia Collection preserves objects relating to the civic history of City of Casey and its predecessors the Shire of Cranbourne and the City of Berwick.

SHP was engaged by the City of Casey in 2020 to conduct a collection review and significance assessment of its Civic Memorabilia Collection. Our review included a Statement of Significance for the whole collection, identification of collection strengths and weaknesses, key themes and recommendations for future collecting. Working closely with Council and in consultation with community members and representatives of local history groups, we provided a detailed and comprehensive collection review that not only demonstrated the importance of the collection to the Casey community and other researchers, but also provided a valuable resource for Council in meeting key goals, outcomes and objectives for the collection. The Significance Assessment revealed the high interpretive capacity of the collection to teach the local community about their history, heritage and identity.
