Convict Road Smartphone App and Kids’ App

Our fun and informative apps make the challenging histories of Australia’s convict past accessible to all audiences.

We created a pilot Smartphone App in 2013 for the World Heritage listed Old Great North Road Interpretation Plan.

Designed for use on the road and before and after visiting the site, the Convict Road App was launched in the App Store on 11 June 2013. It uses interactive maps, films, text and images to tell the stories of the many people who worked on the road. The User Interface allows people to experience the ‘hidden histories’ of the road through a series of short filmed depictions of convict life, focusing on the smells, sights and sounds of the road. It also features filmed interviews with experts on the road, including park rangers, archaeologists and historians.

The Convict Road App was a finalist in the 2013 Australian Mobile Awards.

On the basis of the success of the Convict Road App, NSW Parks & Wildlife then commissioned us to develop a Kids’ App. We created animated cartoon characters that engaged children with the gritty, disgusting and scary elements of the road’s history.
