Lemnos Interpretation Business Case

Helping local people benefit from their heritage and avoiding an expensive ‘white elephant’ was at the heart of SHP’s interpretation plan for the island of Lemnos, Greece.

As part of a joint Australian-Greek project, the Australian National Maritime Museum engaged SHP to develop a business case for ANZAC-based heritage tourism on the Greek Island of Lemnos. Secluded and beautiful, this island is an important part of Australia’s ANZAC heritage as the place where Australian nurses cared for soldiers wounded at Gallipoli.

With our partner MyTravelResearch.com and international colleagues Landlab and MARC Heritage Services, we designed a set of innovative interpretive nodes across the island that communicated this important part of Australian history to tourists and encouraged them to explore the island further. This was based on our business case, which showed that this kind of interpretation would not only build capacity for tourism at the island, but also improve the visitor economy.

SHP’s Business Case received $500,000 in federal government funding in the 2019 budget.
